Commonly Used Preservatives in Cosmetics

Cosmetics are comprised of a combination of different chemical substances derived from organic sources or chemically synthesized ones. Some of the major components found in cosmetics include: colorants, preservatives, humecants, surfactants, and antibacterial agents. Most cosmetic products are water-based so that they do not contain any oils or fats. Oils or fats may contain some medicinal qualities, but it is best to avoid them at all costs as they can be dangerous to one’s health. These days, many people have started to rely on natural cosmetics for their beauty needs.

One such example of natural cosmetics that has gained a lot of popularity over the past few years is triclosan. Triclosan is commonly used in disinfectant, antifungal, and antibiotic soaps. However, recent studies have revealed that this agent causes cancer. The Environmental Protection Agency or EPA had banned the substance in 2021, but it still has not been replaced by most major cosmetic manufacturers in the United States. So what exactly is this toxic chemical found in most consumer products?

Triclosan is a petroleum-based chemical that was first developed in Australia. It is commonly found in hand lotions, deodorants, sanitary pads, and other personal care products. One of the most widely used components of these personal care products is sodium thiopental. Recently, an increasing number of cosmetic products from Australia are getting recalled due to reports of its presence in the cosmetics

Another common ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products is zinc oxide. This is actually a chemical compound. However, when zinc oxide is applied on the skin, it develops a greasy feel. Other chemicals with similar properties include zinc peroxide and salicylic acid. Both of these chemicals are also said to cause acne breakouts, whiteheads, and blackheads.

What makes zinc oxide, an important ingredient in cosmetics is that it can help prevent the development of cancer cells. However, there is still debate over whether or not the chemicals are actually necessary for cosmetics to thicken the skin. Some experts argue that oils can do the job without using chemicals. The problem with using oils in cosmetics is that they have too many undesirable environmental effects.

A third preservative commonly found in cosmetics products is formaldehyde. Formaldyhyde is an alternative to sulfate preservatives, which are more commonly used. This ingredient is said to be non-carcinogenic, which means it doesn’t cause cancer. However, scientific research has yet to prove these claims. As with the other ingredients mentioned above, formaldehyde is also known to cause skin irritation. Because of this, it is not used in cosmetics designed to be applied on the face.
